Cephalosporin antibiotic
Metabolism
Excreted unchanged in urine (33% – 67%) and in bile
- Suspected meningococcal septicaemia
- Severe sepsis (consult only)
- Allergy to Cephalosporin antibiotics
- Allergy to Penicillin antibiotics
Route of administration
- IV (preferred)
- IM (if IV access unavailable)
Special Notes
Usual dose: Adult 1 g, Child 50 mg/kg (max 1 g)
Ceftriaxone IV
IV must be made up to 10 mL using sterile water and dose administered over 2 minutes
Ceftriaxone IM
IM must be made up to 4 mL using 1% Lignocaine and dose administered in lateral upper thigh
